Google \u201cMary Scott\u201d and you\u2019ll see why I use my maiden name, Kolada, as part of my professional name. There are numerous Mary Scotts, some also in Ventura, including another patient of my primary physician, which has caused confusion. Some people remember my name because of Mary, Queen of Scots, and I\u2019d be rich if I had a dollar for every such reference.<\/p>\n
Kolada causes confusion, too. It seems simple enough \u2013 Ko-la-da \u2013 but some add an \u201cn,\u201d making it Kolanda. Classmates called me \u201cclodhopper\u201d and my large-size saddle shoes and clumsiness did nothing to dissuade them.<\/p>\n
Curious people ask about its origin, some assuming that I\u2019m Mexican, but I remind them that there\u2019s no \u201ck\u201d in Spanish. I do say that it\u2019s pronounced like Pina Colada with a K.<\/p>\n
My father, who was born in America but raised in Czechoslovakia (now known as Slovakia), passed on the family name. He said that kolada was a holiday tradition in his mountain village in which the parish priest came to homes on Christmas Eve and blessed the tree and family. Literally, he said it meant \u201cChristmas Blessing,\u201d so my name could be Mary Christmas Blessing.<\/p>\n
A cousin from Slovakia explained that it \u201creally comes from Christmas tradition but it is regional expression,\u201d confirming my father\u2019s explanation. He said a similar word, \u201ckoleda\u201d in the official Slovak language means Christmas song or carol.<\/p>\n
Google \u201cKolada\u201d and you won\u2019t find as many as you would \u201cScott.\u201d I did try to cash in on my name when the movie, \u201cMary Queen of Scots\u201d came out. At the theater, I told the cashier that my name was Mary Scott and I should get in free.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s cute,\u201d she replied and charged me full (senior) price. It was worth a try but the movie was worth the price of admission.\u00a0<\/p>\n
